This remains a bolt on package and can be fitted easily to you car. The standard axle bearings on a Greenpower kit car are somewhat agricultural! Your Greenpower car does not need to run bearings packed with grease - it is a racing machine! The standard bearings would not be seen in a fidget spinner...

Self aligning bearings provide the lowest rolling resistance of all ball bearings. As the axle rotates, the bearing will align with the axle so that any deflections in the shaft do not cause binding in the bearing. Since less work is being done on the bearings by your motor, you will have more energy to go further and faster!

There is a small proviso - these bearings will require routine maintenance! The standard bearings can be left alone for many thousands of miles because they're packed in grease. Unfortunately this means they are slow, sticky, and unnecessary in a race car that might manage 100 miles (hopefully more!) in a days practice and racing. These self aligning bearings can run freely using a light oil lubricant, and they can be re-oiled between races. To keep them in peak racing condition, the bearings will need to be cleaned and re-oiled - a good lesson in routine preventative maintenance!

Extracting the bearings and holders fully for a white spirit bath and re-oil would normally be carried out between events, and with no special tools required.

This bearing concept was first fitted to RLR K in 2015 and are still in use and in great condition after hundreds of miles running.

The main problem encountered when trying to upgrade the axle bearings is developing the bearing holder itself. The standard kit car axle bearings use a pressed steel housing that is only suitable for that type of bearing insert which has a spherical outer, so a bespoke housing is needed to properly mount self aligning ball bearings.

​

The GPMods bearing upgrade is a vast improvement over the standard kit car offering and will deliver much improved rolling resistance. It is also the option used on RLR K for many years.
